De cyclopropaanring kan op verschillende manieren worden geopend, waaronder zuurkatalyse of fotochemische splitsing. Tert-butylcyclopropaancarboxylaat is bestand tegen oxidatie en kan daarom worden gebruikt als synthetisch tussenproduct voor veel verschillende chemische reacties.
